Martin Piller and his wife, Gerina both posted top-five finishes

Martin and Gerina Piller enjoyed a lucrative week as the husband and wife team claimed top-four finishes on the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour respectively.

Martin arrived at the Valero Texas Open having played only four events since the turn of the year, with a best finish of tied for 24th at the CareerBuilder Challenge at the end of January.

But he defied his lack of form to earn a career-best tie for fourth place at TPC San Antonio, although he had threatened to pull off a shock victory when his fourth birdie of the final round at the 12th earned him the outright lead.

However, the 30-year-old made a mess of the next hole and ran up a double-bogey five, and he parred in from there to finish three shots behind champion Charley Hoffman.

He then turned his attention to events in San Francisco as his wife fought hard to stay in contention for the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic.

Gerina was just one shot off the lead after covering the outward nine in a flawless 34, while long-time leader Haru Nomura dropped four shots in five holes to open the door for the field.

But Mrs Piller's challenge hit the buffers when she double-bogeyed the 11th, and she dropped another stroke at the 13th as Nomura recovered to make three birdies on the back nine.

Piller eventually settled for a share of third, finishing five shots behind Nomura, and she pocketed $116,903 for her efforts to add to the cheque for $233,740 made out in her husband's name earlier.

"Watching her is easy," Martin told the Express-News. "She's one of the best players in the world and she's proven herself out there."
