Skysports.com readers split on whether Luke Donald will win his first Major in 2012

Readers of skysports.com have been giving their thoughts on whether newly-crowned PGA player of the year Luke Donald will win a major in 2012 in an online poll. During a stellar 2011, the 33-year-old has had two PGA Tour wins, three European Tour wins and two top 10 finishes in the year's major events. Donald has managed to finish better than fifth in three of the four majors over his 12-year career, with just the US Open eluding him - but it will be the lack of a major win which rankles most. Next year represents an excellent chance for Donald to finally capture his maiden major, especially given none of the four major winners this year Charl Schwartzel, Darren Clarke or Keegan Bradley had previously won one. Over 31 per cent of those who entered the poll believe the Englishman will manage his first win in 2012, 17 per cent are backing Donald to get more than one, while 52 per cent think he'll still be without by the end of the year. Online bookmaker Sky Bet agrees with the readers' consensus; they make Donald 11/4 to win a major in 2012 and 2/7 to remain searching throughout 2012. They also make him 16/1 to win two, 80/1 to win three and an unlikely Grand Slam is available at 250/1. Sky Bet's Dale Tempest said: "Donald has raised the bar with his consitency this year but the question is can he win Major?" "He's 11/4 to win one in 2012 which may appear a little skinny but he certainly has the game to do it and we've already seen a number of sizeable bets on the world No1 to achieve his dream." Donald's best major finish in 2011 was at the Masters, tying for fourth just four shots behind eventual winner Charl Schwartzel. Sky Bet make him 16/1 to capture the Masters and 14/1 to win his first major on home soil at the 2012 Open in Lytham.
