Scottish golfer rolls back the years in Open regional qualifier
Former European Tour rookie of the year Scott Henderson maintained his hopes of making the Open at Sandwich with a 67 at Bruntsfield Links on Monday.
It enabled the 41-year-old, whose best Tour performance was second in the 1998 European Masters, to finish joint first in the regional qualifier with Kirkhill amateur Paul Shields.
They and seven others progress to the 36-hole final qualifying in Kent next Tuesday.
A 68 from Brendan McCarroll gave him top spot at Royal Dublin, while Freddy Valenti's 66 won the event at Mere in Cheshire.
In total 16 courses were being used around Britain and Ireland as amateurs and professionals mixed for the opportunity to compete against the likes of new US Open champion Rory McIlroy on July 14-17.
Host club professional Paul Maddy shared the honours at Gog Magog in Cambridge with amateurs Adam Hedges and Stuart Phillips - all three shot 68 - while another amateur advancing in first place was West Essex's Jack Heasman at Abridge.
A 69 put him alongside Dave Thomas and Ben Montgomery.
One of the best amateur displays of the day, though, came from Surbiton's Ben Rickett at East Sussex National. A 67 made him the winner by two.
John Henry's 67 was enough to see the Clydebank & District golfer finish top of nine qualifiers from Berwick Upon Tweed's Goswick Links course, while Adam Wootton shot a 66 as he headed up 16 qualifiers from Buckinghamshire.
Old Colwyn's Ben Briscoe (68) led 12 qualifiers at Clitheroe, Lee Rooke and Andrew Jones shared the lead at Coventry with 67s, and 69s from Paul Wesselingh and Ian Walley saw them at the head of 12 qualifiers from Enville.
