Only eight players in Players Championship history have fired a hole-in-one at the 17th hole, with Sergio Garcia the most recent to make an ace on the par-three.
The Spaniard came to TPC Sawgrass in 2017 as defending Masters champion and was making his first competitive appearance since his play-off victory at Augusta.
Garcia made a slow start to his week and was three-over after 16 holes, only to light up the opening round at the infamous Stadium hole.
With Justin Thomas looking on at the 16th green, Garcia attacked the flag with his tee shot and saw his ball take a couple of short hops before spinning back into the cup for a timely ace.
