American closes with 66 for 12-shot victory at LPGA Championship

Cristie Kerr claimed her second major title by a 12-stroke margin at the LPGA Championship. The American, who also becomes the new world number one, started the final day at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York with an eight-shot lead. She moved further clear of the chasing pack with back-to-back birdies at the seventh and eighth and reached the turn in a blemish-free 33. And four more birdies on the back nine put the seal on a closing six-under 66 and an incredible 19-under-par total for the tournament. The victory is the 14th of Kerr's career and gives her a second major to go with the 2007 US Open. "It's a dream performance," Kerr said. "It's like you wake up or you dream - I can't even speak right now. "Winning by two or three is great, but winning by 12 shots is ridiculous. It's obscene. "I didn't limit myself. I wanted to see how far I could take it. And I took it pretty far. I don't think I could've played better." Song-Hee Kim closed with a 69 to finish a distant second at seven under, while her fellow South Korean Jiyai Shin (71) ended in a tie for third, a further two shots back, alongside Japan's Ai Miyazato (66), who had held the number one ranking for just one week.
