A chip-in birdie set Tiger Woods on his way to a season-best, six-under 64 in the opening round of the Wyndham Championship.
Woods, who needs a win this week to guarantee breaking into the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings and qualify for the season-ending play-offs, fired seven birdies during a much-improved display at Sedgefield.
Asked whether his biggest strength over the round was his putting or iron play, Woods said: "They were both solid today. They were solid, it was nice.
"I was telling Joey (caddie Joe LaCava) it's finally nice to get something out of a round, a round that could have been two to four under par, it's finally six."
Beginning on the back nine alongside Hideki Matsuyama and Brooks Koepka, the world No 286 found the rough to the left of the 10th green but chipped to within eight feet and watched his ball run into the cup.
The early birdie was soon cancelled out by his only dropped shot at the next after leaving his lay-up short of the green, although Woods progressed the leaderboard by rolling in five-foot putts at the 13th and 15th.
A 12-foot putt at the 16th to save par kept the momentum with Woods, who came in to the event off the back of a third consecutive major missed cut, before the fans' favourite reached the turn in 32 after sliding in a 10-foot birdie at the 18th.
Woods curled in a six-foot gain at the first and picked up further shots by draining birdie putts at the fourth and fifth, but missed the opportunity to move within one of early pace-setter William McGirt by two-putting from four feet to par the sixth.
After tapping in for par at the seventh and eighth, the 14-time major champion pushed home a 11-foot par save at the last to complete his lowest round on the PGA Tour since the 2013 WGC Bridgestone Invitational – Woods' last victory.
