PGA Championship winner Jason Day and world No 7 Dustin Johnson have both been forced to withdraw from the Wednesday Pro-Am ahead of The Barclays.
Day, ranked second in the FedExCup points standings, suffered a back injury but still hopes to play in the first of four season-ending play-offs, while Johnson pulled out due to illness.
"Jason tweaked his back moving an item under his motor coach last night," Cornel Driessen, Day's physiotherapist and trainer, said. "This is a precautionary withdrawal for a long-standing disc issue."
The Australian is due to feature alongside Bubba Watson and new world No 1 Jordan Spieth in the opening two rounds at Plainfield, while Johnson has been grouped with Danny Lee and Patrick Reed.
Johnson struggled through seven holes of the Pro-Am before having to end his round early due to 'severe chest congestion', but also hopes to recover in time to play this week.
"It became evident that he needed to leave the course and get as much rest as possible before tomorrow's opening round," a statement by Johnson's management team said. "He is now under a doctor's care, in the hope of a speedy recovery.
"Needless to say, he is doing everything possible to be ready for the important weeks ahead."
Day was replaced in the Pro-Am by Brendan Steele, while David Hearn took the place of Johnson.
