This week's US Open marks the 50th anniversary of Jack Nicklaus' memorable victory at Baltusrol

The world's top players are at Erin Hills this week for the US Open, 50 years on from Jack Nicklaus' historic victory in the event.

Golf's all-time leading major winner had already completed a career Grand Slam by the time he reached Baltusrol in 1967, where he added a second US Open title in special fashion.

Nicklaus sat four strokes off the pace after an opening-round 71 but reached the weekend in New Jersey just one behind leader and seven-time major champion Arnold Palmer.

The pair were locked together heading in to the final round, one stroke adrift of surprise pacesetter Marty Fleckman, only for Nicklaus to surge ahead in record-breaking style on Sunday.

The Golden Bear birdied five of his opening eight holes to move four clear of the chasing pack, with a five-under 65 seeing him hold on to his advantage and secure a convincing victory.
