Scot tips McDowell, Rose and Lawrie to shine at Lytham

Colin Montgomerie has highlighted Graeme McDowell, Justin Rose and Paul Lawrie as his three dark horses for this week's Open Championship at Lytham. While the likes of Tiger Woods, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy dominate the betting, Montgomerie thinks any of his three selected Britons could walk off with the Claret Jug on Sunday evening. "I pick three guys who might be dark horses really," he told Sky Sports News HD. "One of them is Graeme McDowell who's been here since last Saturday and is playing extremely well, proven in the fact he was in the last group at the US Open, the last major we played. "He hits the ball particularly straight off the tee and Lytham is the best-bunkered course we have on our Open rota. "You have to stay out of the bunkers, that's number one on links golf, you stay out of the bunkers - they are cavernous with a brick wall in front of you, so you wouldn't go there, by choice. Confident "So he drives the ball well and is confident enough to get round here in any conditions. "Another one is Justin Rose, an unsung hero really who won a World Championship event this year down in Doral and I think he has a golden opportunity this particular year of winning The Open. "Again he drives the ball well, he's mentally strong and confident. "The other one is Paul Lawrie. He's playing the golf of his life, holing out particularly well now and driving the ball much, much better than Paul Lawrie ever did. "So there's three that might not be on people's radars when you're thinking about the Woods, the Westwood, the McIlroy and the Donald, because that's the four people that most people are talking about."
