Justin Rose created history in Rio as he recorded the first hole in one in the Olympic Games as golf made a successful return to the schedule.

After home favourite Adilson Da Silva struck the first shot in the Games for 112 years to open the tournament, Rose made his mark with a sensational shot at the fourth hole of his first round.

The Englishman arrived on the tee in good spirits having birdied the third, and he took at the pin at the 191-yard par-three fourth of the Olympic Golf Course in Barra da Tijuca.

Rose made perfect connection with a seven-iron and stared it down in mid-flight, and his ball pitched 10 feet short of the flag and took two soft bounces before rolling straight into the cup.

"It was one of those nice moments," Rose said. "When you are the first to do something, no-one can take it away from you. I give my caddie credit for that one. I was going to hit an eight iron but he told me seven and I went with it for a change and it worked out."

It was a fitting way to mark golf's appearance at the Olympic Games for the first time in 112 years, and Rose went on to card a 67 while Australia's Marcus Fraser opened up a three-shot lead on eight under after an opening 63.
