Reaction from the second round of the USPGA Championship at Southern Hills.Tiger Woods (63-134): "I hit the ball really well and there was a nice little stretch there at 9, 10, 11 where I hit some really good shots. And I just felt that, you know, all day I was in control of my shots today. And I was controlling my trajectory. The hard part was making some putts out there because the greens were not smooth. They were pretty bumpy. Luckily I left a lot of putts below the hole where I could take a pretty good rap at them, trying to take some hops out of it. As far as that last putt, I was trying to make it. And I hit it a little bit firm and I thought I made it, because it was breaking at the end. I knew it broke a lot more at the end than at the beginning. Started diving. Evidently didn't want to go in. 62 would have meant I had a three-shot lead instead of a two-shot lead."
Scott Verplank (66-136): "Obviously I played very well. Really what happened was I got in position where I could actually make a couple of putts. I birdied nine and hit it close another couple of times. I hit the ball yesterday and today as good as I've ever hit it. I just hit lots of fairways, lots of greens, very solid shots and putting at birdie most holes. You know, actually been struggling reading the greens a little bit. Obviously I made a few, but I've had a lot of good chances. So I'm hoping that I'll get my eyes checked, get my eyes fixed where I can see the lines a little bit better and maybe fill it up."
Geoff Ogilvy (68-137): "I'm happy where I am. If you asked me on the first day, 3-under would be a pretty good spot, I would say, yes, that's pretty good. Pretty happy. I mean, Tiger Woods, he does pretty well when he leads off for two rounds and even better when he leads out for three rounds. So I guess that is kind of ominous. But at some point he's not going to win."
Stephen Ames (69-137): "Putting is different this week for me. Putting has been a bit of a downfall for most of the year, actually. And we've changed a couple things this week and it's working nicely. I feel more confident hitting good putts."
Woody Austin (70-138): "The big talk about majors is you can't win the tournament on Thursday and Friday, but you can lose it. Well, I feel like I've lost a great opportunity to be out front because I've had way too many chances. You just can't have that many chances. When you're someone in my position who has never won a major, never won one of these big events, you can't throw away all of these opportunities. I don't have that luxury. There is somebody that has that luxury but it's not me."
Niclas Fasth (68-139): "Well, it was a solid round. I played good all the way around really, not too many mistakes. I guess I felt I could have holed a few more putts, but then that's pretty common, isn't it. The course is very demanding. It's drying out, so it will get tougher and tougher now. Sure, it's a bit hot for my taste, but to be in it in a major come the weekend is fantastic. That's what we all try to play for."
Ernie Els (68-140): You know, you can't think or believe that it's over. You know, I want to believe that it's not; I've got two rounds left. We've all got to play the golf course. We all know he's No. 1 and he's on form, that's kind of dangerous. But I'm playing well myself, and I'd like to get some more birdies out there over the weekend and try and shoot 10-under over the weekend, maybe hopefully that's good enough. I'm hitting the ball kind of good, giving myself a lot of opportunities. I'm a little frustrated with the way I putted on the back nine. So if I make putts tomorrow, I'll make a good score basically."
Graeme Storm (76-141): "I think it is just golf to be honest, just one of those things, again. I didn't get the run of the ball. If I missed the green, I got on the wrong side of the pin. I was struggling to make par. So to be honest, I'm disappointed. I should have really finished closer to where I started the day out. But just a few mistakes and hopefully I can correct them over the weekend."
Phil Mickelson (69-142): "It just feels like I'm leaving four, five shots out there. I felt like on 13, I started out with a couple of poor bogeys that weren't very hard pars. Missed a four-foot eagle putt, didn't get any momentum. On the backside I made some putts. I'm not disappointed. But I followed them with two bogeys. I've got to eliminate that. I feel like I'm playing a lot better than I'm scoring. That's what's been frustrating."
Padraig Harrington (73-142): "My focus was poor today. I kept seeing the negative shots and got on a roll of trying to hit fairways and just missing them. I need to play better golf on the weekend. I think it's probably an easier golf course if you feel like you're trying to go forward than a course you're trying to defend on."
Justin Rose (73-143): "I played terribly. I didn't hit many greens. I seemed to scramble for par all the time. Got off to a bad start, kept my game together in the middle then made two quick birdies on four and six and got it back to one over for the day which would have been a miraculous score based on how I played. Obviously I gave up two bogeys at the end, which was a shame."
