Weir gets the nod

Home favourite Mike Weir has been named as one of the wildcards for next month's Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club

Canadian to play on home soil

Presidents Cup International Team captain Gary Player named home favourite Mike Weir as one of his two wildcards for next month's match at Royal Montreal Golf Club. The 36-year-old Canadian won the Masters in 2003 but has struggled for form recently. He has not won since 2004 and his world ranking has slumped to 46. A neck muscle pull has hampered the left-hander, but he expects to be ready for the match. "I'm really relieved," he said. "Hopefully I can relax a little more and play well. It was tough to wait these last couple weeks." Player's other pick was Australian Nick O'Hern.

Tyros

United States skipper Jack Nicklaus named tyros Hunter Mahan and Lucas Glover as his wildcards. Qualifying for the match on September 27-30 finished on Sunday, with USPGA Championship runner-up Woody Austin claiming the final place in the US team. He joins nine other automatic qualifiers based on PGA Tour prize money. The Internationals' qualifiers are based on world rankings. The United States leads the series 4-1-1, and won the last match two years ago on home soil 18 1/2-15 1/2, but the Internationals have never lost outside of the US, winning in Australia in 1998 and earning a draw in South Africa in 2003. US. team: Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Charles Howell III, Scott Verplank, David Toms, Steve Stricker, Stewart Cink, Woody Austin, Lucas Glover, Hunter Mahan.
