Cook bounces back from Troon disappointment

American Fred Funk shot an opening 65 to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the US Senior Open in Colorado Springs. The 52-year-old former Players champion is one clear of fellow countryman John Cook, who lost in a play-off to Bruce Vaughan at last week's British Seniors Open. The highlight of Funk's round was a run of birdie, eagle, birdie from the second as he went out in four-under-par 32. He picked up further shots at 16 and 17, his only blemish a bogey five at the last. Cook's only dropped shot came at 17 and he had five birdies as he quickly tried to make amends for last week at Royal Troon, where he really should have won his first major. "I didn't like the way it finished last week at all," Cook said. "Second is not good. Once I decided that this week has started now and it's a different week, a different tournament, another major championship, you know, I can put that last week behind me until I get home next week. "I played very well today and struck the ball nicely. I made a couple of very nice par putts, which you have to do, and I put the ball in play. A 66 is very satisfying." Spaniard Juan Quiros, Argentina's Eduardo Romero and Americans Tom Kite and Morris Hatalsky are a further stroke back in a tie for third. Eight-time major winner Tom Watson opened with a 69, while Australian Greg Norman and defending champion Bart Bryant both shot 70s.
