Late eagle gives American halfway share of lead in Honolulu
American veteran Tom Pernice Jr grabbed a share of the lead with Australian Nathan Green after the second round of the Sony Open in Honolulu.
The American hit an eagle on his final hole at the Waialae Country Club to complete a seven-under round of 63, and join Green on eight-under for the tournament at the halfway point.
Pernice had five birdies along with his final-hole eagle, making light of the wet and windy conditions.
"Obviously, conditions like this on a challenging golf course and to get around in seven-under, yeah, it's a very good round," Pernice said.
Plod away
"You're not going out thinking you're going to shoot seven-under. You just kind of plod your way around and try to hang in there.
"The mentality was to hang in there and keep plugging along, and (I) made some nice saves when I needed to on the back nine. Obviously, the eagle at the last was quite exciting."
Australian Green also handled the wet and windy conditions well to card a second successive four-under round of 66, which included five birdies and a bogey.
"I don't think the conditions were as bad as we thought they were going to be," Green said.
"Last night, you could hear the wind whipping. Sort of a stronger version of yesterday. It didn't seem anywhere near as strong as they predicted."
The duo are one shot ahead of first-round leader Shigeki Maruyama, who added a 68 to his opening 65, who is in a tie with Brian Gay on seven-under.
2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson is a further stroke behind after a mixed round of 65, including two bogeys, five birdies and an eagle.
Last week's Mercedes-Benz Championship winner Geoff Ogilvy is in a group tied at five-under alongside Steve Marino, Boo Weekley and Charles Howell III.
