American signs up for 'Race to Dubai'

Boo Weekley has become the latest big-name American golfer to join the European Tour's 'Race to Dubai'. Weekley follows in the footsteps of US Ryder Cup-winning team-mate Anthony Kim and will make his European Tour debut at this week's Qatar Masters. The 35-year-old paid his membership fees last week and has confirmed he will play the required 12 events to ensure he is eligible for the season-ending Dubai World Championship - the climax to the lucrative new-look 'Race to Dubai'. Scott Verplank - a veteran of two Ryder Cups - is also enlisting along with Weekley and the duo join the likes of Kim and Camilo Villegas in confirming their transatlantic commitments. Weekley's decision has been welcomed by some of Europe's leading names, with triple-major champion Padraig Harrington stating: "For the European Tour to attract a US player is a tremendous statement of how strong it is. "I don't think it's happened before this year that by choice players of that stature have joined the European Tour. "Boo will be a great boost for the Tour. He's a great character and a good golfer." 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie added: "Players of Boo's calibre are always welcome, there is no question about that. He's a big character and he displayed at the Ryder Cup how good a player he is so we welcome guys like him playing over here. "To have Boo joining Anthony Kim here in Europe is good news for the Tour."
