Japanese player gets better of Gustafson in play-off

Japan's Ai Miyazato edged out Sophie Gustafson of Sweden at the first extra hole of a play-off to win the Evian Masters on Sunday. It was a first-ever LPGA Tour success for the 24-year-old, who produced a final round of 69 to finish alongside Gustafson (70) on 14-under-par. However, Gustafson will be kicking herself having missed an opportunity to close out victory on the 72nd green when an eagle putt finished agonisingly short of the cup. In the play-off the Swede had a putt for birdie from the edge of the green which she could not hole and Miyazato stepped up to roll home from six feet for her birdie to clinch the tournament. Wales' Becky Brewerton - who shared the overnight lead with Gustafson - endured a day to forget as her chances went up in smoke following a four-over-par 76. Brewerton recorded five bogeys and a double-bogey as she slipped back down the field, eventually finishing in a tie for 13th on eight-under. Meena Lee produced the best round of the day with a closing 65 - which included nine birdies - ensuring she claimed a share of third with American Cristie Kerr. Helen Alfredsson of Sweden (70), Australian Karrie Webb (71) and American Paula Creamer (70) tied for fifth on 11-under-par.
