US duo combine for one-shot win Florida

World number three Steve Stricker produced a timely eagle at the 17th hole as he and fellow American Jerry Kelly prevailed at the annual Shark Shootout by a single stroke. The three-day team event takes place at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida over the Greg Norman-designed lay-out there. Twelve two-man teams take part with the first-round using the modified alternate shot rule, the second the better ball rule and the third and final round the scramble rule. Stricker's eagle helped he and Kelly post a 26-under-par total of 190 that saw them edge out Kenny Parry and JB Holmes, Justin Leonard and Scott Verplank and Chad Campbell and Tim Clark, all of whom finished on 25-under. Holmes and Kelly had the chance to force a play-off, but were unable to secure the birdie they needed down the 18th. Meanwhile Clark, who fired a hole-in-one, and Campbell shot a 15-under 57 that was just two strokes outside the 21-year-old tournament's scramble record. The early clubhouse lead went to Clark and Campbell at 25-under and Leonard and Verplank joined them with a 59, while Perry and Holmes also carded a 59 for a three-way tie for second place. English duo Ross Fisher and Ian Poulter were another pairing to shoot 59 as they finished in a tie for fifth alongside Steve Flesch and Dustin Johsnon. Winners Stricker and Kelly shared a first-prize cheque of $750,000.
