Rickie Fowler was just inches away from a hole-in-one albatross at the fifth hole during the third round of The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale.

The tee had been brought forward to 310 yards for the dog-leg right hole, rather than the standard 346 yards, and that gave the players the chance to drive the green.

Fowler was equal to the challenge with his drive landing near the front of the green and kicking slightly to the right towards the hole.

With the crowd getting excited, the ball looked to be heading in, only for it to curl away slightly to the right as it ended up just six inches away.

Fowler, who had recorded a pair of 71s in his opening two rounds, duly tapped in the putt for an eagle two which moved him up to level par for the tournament after he had started his third round with four successive pars.

The American followed his eagle with another nine pars on the trot before he birdied the two par fives - the 15th and 17th - but a bogey at the 18th left him with a three-under 67 and one-under after 54 holes.
