The Danish veteran, who has posted top-10s in five of his last six starts on the European Tour, was one of 10 players to secure exemptions for Muirfield after the weekend.

The 42-year-old tied for second at the Open in 2000 and led the 2003 tournament by two shots with three to play only to take three to get out of a bunker and gift the Claret Jug to 500/1 outsider Ben Curtis.

Bjorn is exempt for Muirfield via his place in the Race to Dubai along with Scotland's Marc Warren, who was joint second with Simon Khan in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Three other European Tour players - South African Richard Sterne, Australian Brett Rumford and Swede Mikko Ilonen - also clinched their spots via the Race to Dubai.

Joining them will be five PGA Tour counterparts who made the grade via their places in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Florida's Billy Horschel, who enjoyed his breakthrough win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April and finished fourth at last month's US Open, will make his debut as will 34-year-old Jimmy Walker after he finished runner-up at the Greenbrier Classic.

Sony Open winner Russell Henley will also make his Open debut, while Boo Weekley - 13th in 2009 - and Harris English are also confirmed starters.

A further eight have secured their places as the highest-ranked non-exempt players based on the world rankings at the end of last week.

Greenbrier Classic champion Jonas Blixt and fellow Swede Fredrik Jacobsen, Scotland's Martin Laird, Australian Marc Leishman, Canada's Graham DeLaet, American pair Kyle Stanley and Ken Duke and England's Chris Wood have all been handed spots.

First reserve Stephen Gallacher, who missed out on qualifying outright by just £754, has also been added to the field after John Daly withdrew at the weekend.

The 1995 champion revealed on Saturday that he requires an elbow operation which is expected to end his season.
