Offaly are a massive 18/1 to beat Tipperary in a championship game for the first time on Saturday night, but they should take heart from Wexford’s odds-defying performance against Clare last weekend.
Wexford were 12/1 to draw with the defending All-Ireland champions and Offaly are 16/1 to gain the same result over Tipp, who are massive favourites to win inside 70 minutes at 1/60.
Tipp secured their first championship win under Eamon O’Shea last weekend, coming from behind to defeat Galway and satisfy odds of 8/15 with the win.
After finishing that game strongly with a string of scores, Tipp will head into the meeting at O’Moore Park with momentum and less pressure, while Offaly just about improved their poor record in the qualifiers last time out.
The Faithful County have won less than half of their qualifiers in total and only remained in the championship courtesy of a last-gasp goal from Brian Carroll against Antrim late last month, so they’re really up against it here.
With the wind in their sails, coupled with Offaly’s stuttering form, Tipperary should have enough to cover their handicap of -14 at 10/11 with Sky Bet.
Earlier on Saturday, Wexford get their second chance against Clare on their own turf, and the change in odds for the replay reflects the threat they provided at Cusack Park.
Having been 11/2 to beat Clare first time around, their odds for a win have been almost halved to 3/1, but Davy Fitzgerald’s men remain the odds-on favourites at 2/7.
The pair went to extra-time in last year’s qualifiers as well as last week, and another draw can be backed at 10/1. Clare have looked out of sorts in the championship this year, so the 10/11 on the Banner County winning with a -4 handicap fails to inspire confidence.
Wexford will probably fall short again, but with their confidence and belief up, plus the added bonus of the home support, they can push Clare all the way again – back them with a +4 handicap at 10/11.
As for Sunday, there are a few football fixtures that catch the eye, most notably Mayo against Galway in the Connacht final.
Galway have come on in leaps and bounds this year and the reward is a first provincial final appearance since 2009, but the Tribesmen are 7/2 underdogs nonetheless.
That makes Mayo 1/4 to win the title for the fourth year running and, on the basis of last year’s 17-point winning margin over Galway in the Connacht quarters, the -4 handicap looks generous at 10/11.
However, Galway had two men sent off on that occasion and recovered from that crushing defeat admirably, so the gap should be much closer this year, particularly if the Tribesmen keep their discipline.
Mayo should be good for their price of 1/4, but for a bit of extra value, take Galway with +4 in the handicap market at 10/11.
Meanwhile, Sunday also sees the all-Ulster round two qualifier clash between Tyrone and Armagh, and the fresher Red Hands should justify their odds of 4/11 to beat the Orchard County (11/4), who are playing for the third consecutive weekend following their replay defeat to Monaghan.
Your best bet: Tipperary to beat Offaly by more than 14 points – 10/11
