Lightweight title contender Gilbert Melendez has been suspended for one year for failing a post-fight drug test, the UFC announced on Monday.

Melendez (22-5) also has been removed from a scheduled bout against Al Iaquinta in San Diego on July 15.

The 33-year-old tested positive for testosterone metabolites from an external source after his split-decision loss to Eddie Alvarez in Mexico City on June 13.

A UFC statement said: “Following his bout at UFC 188 in Mexico City on June 13, UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez tested positive for exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites.

“The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by our athletes.
