Mo Farah wins 10,000 metres at Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting

Britain’s Mo Farah kept his four-year winning streak over 10,000 metres intact as he clocked the year's fastest time so far of 26 minutes, 50.97 seconds to win at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon.

The Olympic and world champion was challenged by Paul Tanui, but pushed to the front with 350m to go to defeat the determined Kenyan, who ran 26:51.86.

Geoffrey Kamworor, also of Kenya, took third in 26:52.65 and all three were inside the previous best in the world this year, the 27:08.21 by Tanui on May 16, but Farah was disappointed with his effort.

“It would have been good to run a little bit faster," he said. "Training has been going pretty well.

"But it was tough. It was difficult doing it all the way by yourself. The pacemakers the first couple of laps were spot on, then it slowed down a lot.

"We were just going back and forth and that's wasting a lot of energy."

Farah’s next race will be a 1,500m at next month's Birmingham Diamond League meeting, but he remains undecided on whether or not to try for another 5,000-10,000 double at August's World Championships in Beijing.

"I don't know what is going to happen after that," he added.

Ethiopian world junior champion Yomif Kejelcha stole the show in the men's 5,000m, running a lifetime best 13:10.54, also the year's fastest time.

The 17-year-old surged past Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Galen Rupp of the US with 300m remaining and won comfortably.

Also on the first day of the two-day meeting, American long jumper Tianna Bartoletta became the first woman to leap over seven metres this year, although her mark of 7.11m was wind-aided.

Canadian Christabel Nettey was second with a leap of 6.99m ahead of British duo Lorraine Ugen (6.89) and Shara Proctor (6.70).

Poland's Piotr Malachowski won the discus and American Joe Kovacs took victory in the shot putt.
