Mo Farah became only the second British man to win the Great North Run twice

Mo Farah has retained his Great North Run title with the fastest half-marathon ever recorded by a British athlete.

The double Olympic and world champion finished in a time of 59 minutes and 43 seconds after a thrilling sprint finish to beat Kenya's Stanley Biwott.

Farah is the second British man to win the Great North Run twice, following on from Mike McLeod who won it in 1981 and 1982.

Paralympic champion David Weir achieved a record-equalling sixth win in the elite men's wheelchair race. 

There was British success too in the women's wheelchair race as Shelly Woods won her seventh title.

Kenya's Mary Keitany won the women's elite race in a time of 1 hour, 7 mins and 32 secs.

More than 50,000 athletes have taken part in the Great North Run, which is now in its 35th year.
