Glasgow has been confirmed as the venue for the European Indoor Championships in 2019.

The Emirates Arena will stage the biennial event after the Scottish city beat off competition from Apeldoorn in the Netherlands, Belarus' capital Minsk and Torun in Poland.

Glasgow received nine votes, Torun six and Apeldoorn one in the vote by the European Athletics Council.

The Championships will be held at the Emirates Arena which hosted the prestigious Indoor Grand Prix earlier this year and the British Athletics International Match from 2013 to 2015.

European Athletics president Svein Arne Hansen said: "In Glasgow, we have chosen a fantastic host. Glasgow has assured us that we can look forward to an event of the highest standard."

Scotland's 800 metres runner Lynsey Sharp said: "This is great news for Glasgow, for athletics in the UK in general and Scotland in particular.

"I'm sure it will be an amazing championships that athletes and the community will be proud to be part of. Competing in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to compete on home turf again.
