James Ellington and Nigel Levine in hospital after road crash

James Ellington says he does not know how he and British sprinting partner Nigel Levine are still alive after a motorbike accident in Tenerife on Tuesday.

Ellington, a 100m and 200m sprinter and Levine, a 400m runner, were hit by a car travelling on the wrong side of the road. Both were wearing helmets.

Sky Sports News HQ understands Ellington has suffered two broken legs and a suspected broken pelvis, while Levine has a suspected broken pelvis.

The pair are stable and conscious and their injuries are not life-threatening.

"Overwhelmed and truly touched by everyone's messages and support, I truly am blessed as I do not know how me or my training partner Nigel are still alive," Ellington wrote on Instagram follow the accident.

"Me and him are both strong characters and will be looking to bounce back from this horrific accident."

Ellington and Levine were part of British Athletics warm weather camp in Tenerife. They arrived ten days ago and were due to return to the UK this weekend. Another group of British athletes are currently in South Africa.

Doctors accompanying the British Athletics camp are with the athletes and saw them last night in hospital. At this time they are leaving Ellington and Levine in the hands of the local hospital medical staff.

A British Athletics spokesman said: "Regretfully we can confirm that James Ellington and Nigel Levine have sustained injuries following a road accident in Tenerife on Tuesday evening.

"Both athletes are receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable. British Athletics medical staff are with the athletes and liaising with hospital staff over their treatment.

"We are in communication with their family members in the UK and will be keeping them informed of the situation."
