Mo Farah signed off on indoor athletics in style as he set a new European record in the 5000m in Birmingham.

Farah, who is quitting the track altogether later this year to concentrate on road racing, held off Albert Rop's challenge to come home in a time of 13 minutes 10.60 seconds.

The win marked a return to form for the long-distance great, who came seventh in an Edinburgh cross-country event on his only other appearance of the season to date.

"I knew from Edinburgh I needed to do some work," he told the BBC. "I had to go away and leave my family behind to do more training. It has paid off. Hard work pays off.

"The crowds have been so good for me over the years. I will miss it. I can't quite believe it's my last race."

Farah's was not the only eye-catching home performance on the day as Laura Muir raced to a new British record in the 1000m.
