Andrew Pozzi had a trip to the United States to forget as sickness and Liverpool's Champions League defeat ruined his weekend.

The 26-year-old Sky Sports Scholar was in Oregon for the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League hoping to bounce back from his "carnage" race in the Great CityGames in Manchester.

However, Pozzi was ill in the build-up and was seventh in the 110m hurdles as World and Olympic champion Omar McLeod stormed home in 13.01 seconds ahead of Sergey Shubenkov and Devon Allen.

"I'm very disappointed to have struggled so much out in Eugene," said Pozzi who clocked 13.51s.

"After 20 hours of travel, I picked up food poisoning two days before my race. In the middle of the night, I awoke to terrible sickness and vomiting which lasted about 36 hours and meant I spent the day before my race in a local hospital.

"I made it to the start line but felt exhausted and sadly it showed in my race. It was a great competition and atmosphere and I'm just sad I couldn't play a better part."

Real Madrid becoming European champions also didn't help Pozzi's mood as his beloved Liverpool lost 3-1 in Kiev.

"To make matters worse the heartbreak started a few hours earlier as I followed Liverpool's Champions League progress by live updates and texts from friends," he added.

"All in all a day to learn from and move on!"
