Great Britain's Shara Proctor dramatically missed out on World Championships gold in the long jump after American Tianna Bartoletta took the lead with her final leap.

Proctor looked all set to be champion after setting a new British record of 7.07m but, under intense pressure, Bartoletta produced an incredible 7.14m, the longest in the world this year, to secure the title.

Serbia's Ivana Spanovic won bronze and set a new national record herself with a jump of 7.01 while Britain also claimed fifth place courtesy of Lorraine Ugen (6.85), but there was further disappointment for Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who only managed 11th.

Bartoletta was notching her second long jump world title, a full 10 years after she won he first in Helsinki.

The Anguilla-born Proctor was left with the consolation of becoming the first British woman to go over seven metres after a very impressive set of jumps at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing.

Having extended her own national record by nine centimetres when she took the lead with her third-round leap, she added a jump of 7.01m in the fifth.

However, she was then overtaken by Bartoletta's final jump and was red-flagged on her last attempt.

The 26-year-old Proctor said: "This is my fifth World Championships and I knew I had to compete. I feel like a winner, I don't care about the colour of the medal.

"I was told I might not be strong enough. I'm here, I conquered. Two jumps over seven metres, I'm still in awe."

But Johnson-Thompson, having only finished 28th in the heptathlon on Sunday due to her failure to record a score in the long jump after three fouls, was unable to make the final eight here after two efforts of 6.63m, with a no jump in the middle.

She told the BBC: "I am really disappointed not to be in the final eight but I gave everything I could.

"I don't know why this has been sent to test me. This has been one of the worst weeks of my life but hopefully I can bounce back next year."
