An eight-run eighth inning set up a 12-3 win for the Baltimore Orioles in their American League Division Series showdown against the Detroit Tigers.
Nelson Cruz had three RBIs and Alejandro De Aza added two more for Baltimore, who managed six hits against Tigers' starting pitcher Max Scherzer at Camden Yards.
Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera homered off Darren O'Day in the top of the eighth to pull Detroit within 4-3, but Baltimore responded in emphatic fashion by sending 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the inning.
The victory gives the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five division series - game two takes place on Friday.
In the opening game between Kansas City and the Los Angeles Angels, the Royals won 3-2 at Anaheim.
Mike Moustakas, leading off the 11th inning, hit the first extra-inning homer in post-season history for the visitors, giving them the edge going into Friday night's second match in the series.
Los Angeles, who finished with the best record in the regular season, had home runs from Chris Iannetta and David Freese in the third and fifth inning respectively.
Kansas City had made it through to face the Angels after winning a one-game wild card playoff against the Oakland A's on Tuesday, having initially reached the post season for the first time in 29 years.
