The 2026 NBA Finals are upon us, with the New York Knicks leading the San Antonio Spurs 2-0 in the seven-game series to be crowned kings of basketball. Here's all you need to know about the Finals so far and what's still to come...

Wembanyama confident of inspiring Spurs comeback

Less than 48 hours after missing a shot at the end of Game 2 that would have beaten the Knicks and evened the series, Victor Wembanyama said the pressure of the situation does not bother him as the Spurs enter Game 3 - at 1.30am on Tuesday morning - facing a 2-0 deficit.

Victor Wembanyama endured a nightmare ending to Game 2 of the NBA Finals as the San Antonio Spurs lost out to the New York Knicks

"There's really no reason to overthink it," Wembanyama said. "This is what I'm built for."

The 22-year-old big man from France, who is quickly becoming the face of the league, has not been the problem for the Spurs. He led them with 26 points in the series opener and had a Game 2-high 29 points.

The pressure has never been higher, given that no team in league history has lost the first two games of the Finals at home and gone on to win the title.

Wembanyama added: "How do I deal with it? I think the key is acceptance a lot of times, taking a step back, realising all the journey that's behind this and what's ahead of this. Just being okay with who I am, where I am, what I'm doing.

"We need to capitalise, actually use all the efforts we did. It felt like we did a lot of things wrong, but we also were relentless and kept pushing, but we kind of like wasted that effort.

"I know it's not wasted though, because our lessons are learned, I know we're not going to make the mistakes of the past again, but in a moment like this we need to make these things matter."

NBA FINALS
Image: The New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs are meeting in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999

The Spurs and Knicks are meeting in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999, when San Antonio claimed their first-ever title with a 4-1 series victory.

That triumph sparked a golden era, leading to five championships in total and culminating in their last Finals appearance and victory in 2014.

The Knicks, meanwhile, have not reached the Finals since that 1999 defeat and are once again tasked with ending a title drought that ranks among the longest for the NBA's marquee franchises.

Not since 1973 have the Knicks lifted basketball's biggest prize - and this current generation now carries the weight of ending a 53-year drought.

Whether it is a long-awaited third NBA title for the Knicks or a sixth for the Spurs, there will be a different champion for an eighth successive season.

How did we get here?

The Spurs and Knicks split their regular-season meetings, each winning on home court.

The Knicks beat the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the play-offs before sweeping the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers to book their place in the Finals, arriving on an 11-game winning streak.

San Antonio overcame the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves before dramatically dethroning defending champions the Oklahoma City Thunder in a Game 7 thriller.

Three years on from being the No1 pick in the NBA Draft, will the 2026 Finals prove the crowning moment for generational talent Victor Wembanyama?

The 22-year-old has spearheaded the Spurs' run in his first play-off campaign, earning Western Conference Finals MVP honours for his performances.

Wembanyama is already regarded as one of the best players in the league, but victory over the Knicks would cement his status - and potentially lay the foundations for a second Spurs dynasty.

Jalen Brunson has been the driving force behind the Knicks' run to the 2026 NBA Finals.

The 29-year-old guard has elevated his game in the postseason, delivering in clutch moments as New York surged through the Eastern Conference.

Brunson's emergence as one of the league's premier playmakers has underlined his ability to lead an offense with championship-winning credentials.

With the burden of a 53-year title drought on his shoulders, Brunson now stands on the brink of cementing his legacy as a Knicks great.
