Nairo Quintana will miss next week's Ruta del Sol in Spain after crashing at the Colombian national championships.

The 25-year-old had been due to come up against Chris Froome and Alberto Contador at the five-day race, which takes place from February 18-22, but will now resume his season at March’s Tirreno-Adriatico.

Quintana crashed heavily towards the end of last Sunday’s national road race and sustained heavy bruising.

Announcing their squad for the Ruta del Sol, Quintana’s Movistar team said he “continues to recover from the discomfort of his fall”.

Quintana started his season last month at the Tour de San Luis in Argentina, where he finished third overall.

His main target for the year will be the Tour de France. Missing the Ruta del Sol deprives him of the chance to test his form against Froome and Contador, who are likely to be his closest rivals at the Tour.
