Miguel Angel Lopez will take an eight-second lead into the final stage of the Tour de Suisse after a fine effort in Saturday's time-trial.

The Colombian climber, part of the Astana team, produced one of his best rides against the clock to finish the eighth stage in second place, 18 seconds adrift of winner Jon Izagirre (Movistar).

Lopez even managed to beat former world time-trial champion Fabian Cancellara by a second, although he was well suited by the rolling nature of the course that seemed to help the climbers out a little.

And, with leader Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin) finishing 57 seconds down on the day, it will be Lopez who has to defend the overall race lead going into Sunday's 117.7km race around Davos.

Andrew Talansky (Cannondale) is Lopez's nearest challenger after finishing fifth in the 16.8km time-trial.

The race will almost certainly come down to the final climb, up to the summit of the Fluelapass at 2,383m, although the finish itself comes after a lengthy descent back into the winter sports resort.

Izagirre is within 16 seconds of the lead himself, having moved up to third ahead of Barguil by two seconds.
