Geraint Thomas has spoken of his devastation at crashing out of the Tour de France, but has backed Team Sky to regroup and "do a great job for Froome".

The Briton is recovering in France after breaking his collarbone from the fall on stage nine on Sunday.

Thomas was placed second in the general classification before the incident which saw him crash in the first downhill section.

Thomas, who plans to take some time off to recover from the disappointment, told Sky Sports News HQ: "Physically I am still in a bit of pain, the metal anguish is worse.

"It's a massive disappointment to be leaving the boys so early. I've had a big season already, my goal was the Giro d'Italia in May and I crashed out of that through no fault of my own.

"I dusted myself down. I won the first stage and wore the yellow jersey last week, one of the highlights of my career.

"Within a week I am going home with a broken collarbone - huge highs and lows. I am going to take a week out in Cardiff, go to the pub and reset."

Chris Froome leads the general classification and Thomas believes his crash will lead to Team Sky pulling together even more.

"It's an extra body they're going to be missing," Thomas added. "But the lads are super strong, when something negative happens in the group if it brings everyone closer together.

"They will all pull together. I've got every confidence they will pull together and do a great job for Froome.

"They have done it before and I'm sure they can do it again."
