Marianne Vos added the world road race title to the Olympic gold medal she won in London by storming to a fine solo victory in front of her home fans. The Dutch cycling icon jumped clear of a five-woman break on the final ascent of the Cauberg and then opened up an unassailable lead as she pressed onto the finish line. Indeed, such was the advantage in her favour, that the 25-year-old had time to grab her national flag before she wrapped up her victory with 10 seconds to spare over Australia's Rachel Neylan. Italian Elisa Borghini took the third place on the podium, while Emma Pooley led Great Britain home in 15th position, four minutes and 37 seconds back on Vos. Great Britain had been on the back foot almost from the off after key members of the team were caught up in a massive crash which took place within minutes of the start. Subsequent attacks came and went, but the decisive move came with two laps remaining when Vos bridged over to a breakaway group and was joined by team-mate Anna van der Breggen. The duo worked hard to ensure the move stayed clear, and Vos sent the partisan crowd wild when she kicked again on the iconic Cauberg before riding home to seal her second road race rainbow jersey.
