Igor Anton signs two-year deal with Movistar after folding of Euskaltel-Euskadi team

Movistar have confirmed the signing of Spanish climber Igor Anton on a two-year deal.

The 30-year-old was left without a team when the Basque outfit folded at the end of the 2013 season after failing to find new sponsorship.

He has signed a two-year deal with the Spanish team and will be a key lieutenant in the mountains for the likes of Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana.

Anton boasts an excellent record as a climber but is yet to transform his talent into results in Grand Tours, his best finish so far an eighth place in the Vuelta a Espana in 2007.

But he was very unlucky in the same race in 2010 when he took the leader's red jersey with victories on stages four and 11 but then spectacularly crashed out while still in front.

He has won four stages in Spain's biggest race as well as taking stage 14 in the 2011 Giro d'Italia, but last season proved to be a disappointment as he failed to make the top-20 in the Tour de France and finished 20th in the Vuelta.

Anton is the fourth rider from Euskaltel-Euskadi to sign for Movistar during the off-season along with brothers Gorka and Jon Izagirre and sprinter Juan Jose Lobato.
