Vasil Kiryienka continues his fine run of time trialling form by winning the Belarussian National Championships.
Vasil Kiryienka has continued his fine run of time trialling form by winning the Belarussian National Championships.
Kiryienka was a last-minute addition to the event but clocked a time of 41 minutes and 46 seconds over the 36.3km course in Narovlia which proved 2min 03sec quicker than the second-placed Branislau Samoilau (CCC Sprandli Polkowice).
The result saw him claim his fourth national time trial title, his first since 2006, and means he will wear his national jersey in every time trial he enters over the next 12 months.
Team Sky team-mate Kanstantsin Siutsou didn’t enter the event, and it is he who relinquishes the Belarussian jersey after winning the same race in 2014.
Kiryienka’s win is his third successive time trial success, having romped to victory on the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia and also made history by becoming the first-ever winner of the European Games in Baku earlier this month.
Elsewhere, Leopold Konig placed second in the Czech Republic Time Trial Championships after being pipped to victory by three-time winner Jan Barta (Bora – Argon 18), and Christian Knees claimed a top-five finish in Germany after Tony Martin (Etixx - Quick-Step) sealed his fifth title.
