What it takes to be a Grand Tour domestique
The Tour de France is one of the toughest races in the world and presents a huge test for any cyclist. Just to get through the three weeks is an achievement - let alone to ride them in service of a team leader. With the help of TrainingPeaks we take a closer look at Team Sky rider Danny Pate and the speed, power and effort required to be a top-class Tour domestique. Before we start - spend some time looking at how to analyse a Tour file. Stage 1: Saturday, July 5 – Leeds to Harrogate – 190.5km

From Cambridge to London, Stage three was the last day in the UK. Huge crowds were on hand to watch as Team Sky again kept the team together. Part of riding a three-week tour is knowing when to expend your energy and when to save it. As the numbers show, Pate took the opportunity to conserve a bit of energy during this shorter stage while still fulfilling his duties to his team-mates.

Finally on French soil, Stage four had a few rolling hills but was ultimately a stage for the sprinters. Much like day one, Pate had the same average power, but a lower Normalized Power, meaning he didn’t have to do as many hard accelerations or jumps. This is noted by the fact that his peak 20 power is 77 watts lower on Stage four than it was for Stage one.

A chaotic stage due to rain, cobblestones and a nervous peloton, this stage may have been the shortest so far, but it took a lot out of every rider. This stage had the highest Average and Normalized Power for Pate so far. The fact that the average and normalized power values are so close show that rather than accelerating and slowing, Pate put out a steady effort. Not surprisingly, this stage also produced Pate’s highest Intensity Factor at .74. This means that Pate rode for 3:34 at 74 percent of what he could sustain for one hour. Very few riders are capable of an effort like this, especially after four stages and with 16 more stages to go!
