Armstrong, Popovych and Steegmans set to star Down Under

RadioShack will make their worldwide UCI ProTour debut with a competitive team at the 2010 Santos Tour Down Under in Adelaide. The team headed by Lance Armstrong includes Tour de France stage winners Yaroslav Popovych and Gert Steegmans. Mike Turtur race director at Santos Tour Down Under is delighted with the team's line up. He said: "There's no doubt that it's great for the race and for South Australia that Lance is returning to the Santos Tour Down Under in January. "He is real legend of the sport and it's been massive for our race that he made his cycling comeback here in 2009 and will debut Team RadioShack here in 2010." Popovych, who won the young rider classification at the 2005 Tour de France and a stage at the 2006 event, is expected to be a key figure in the team. Steegmans is also set to feature, with the Belgian having won stages at the Tour de France in 2007 and 2008.

Competitive

Turtur said: "Popovych has been a loyal servant of Armstrong's at Discovery Channel and Astana, and is a very capable rider himself. Our race gives him an opportunity to do well, and will also suit Steegman's sprinting skills." Other riders to join Armstrong, Popovych and Steegmans include South Africa's Daryl Impey, USA's Jason McCartney, Belgium's Sebastien Rosseler and Tomas Vaitkus from Lithuania. Turtur is expecting RadioShack to compete for top spot. "RadioShack will be very competitive from the word go," he said. "Johan Bruyneel (team director of RadioShack) plays to win and the team racing in Adelaide next year is strong, tough and experienced, and will want to make their presence felt as the cycling world watches."
