Who inspired you to start cycling?

I just loved the freedom of being on my bike. I was on a bike as soon as I could get my hands on one.

First bike:

It was a hand-me-down BMX bike. With no gears and it was all rusty.

First cycling club:

Hobart Wheelers

Childhood hero:

I just looked up to anyone that I thought was doing something cool at the time

What do you love most about cycling?

The challenge. It’s never not challenging and it doesn’t matter how good you are and how much you win.

What has cycling taught you?

Discipline, looking after yourself, setting goals. Having high expectations of yourself - a lot of life skills.

Previous teams:

2008-13 Huon Salmon Genesys Wealth Advisers (Praties)

Favourite race:

Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Career highlight:

The Tour of New Zealand. I won that in 2013 and won two stages.

If you weren't a rider, what would you be?

A train driver. From when I was a little kid I had a fascination with trains.

Interests away from cycling:

White water rafting and kayaking.

Favourite film:

The World’s Fastest Indian.

Favourite music:

I like a little bit of everything. It depends what mood I’m in.

Best friend in the peloton:

Richie Porte

Favourite food:

I like home-made Pizzas. My fiancée makes the bases from scratch and they are the best.

Most famous person you've met:

I’d say Chris Froome. He’s a completely normal regular down to earth guy.

Most embarrassing moment:

I was in a break and I was looking back. The road curved to the right and all of a sudden I did a front flip into a ditch. That’s not usually like me!

Interesting fact:

I’m a bit of a DIY man. I love getting home and building stuff.

Best advice:

The main thing is just stick at it.
