Dame Sarah Storey fell 563m short in her bid to break the women’s world hour record.

The 11-time Paralympic champion was attempting to beat Dutch rider Leontien van Moorsel’s record of 46.065km, set in 2003, but could only travel 45.502km at London’s Lee Valley VeloPark.

She began well but had slipped off the pace by the halfway mark and never looked like pulling back the deficit. At the finish she had to be helped off of her bike and collapsed to the ground in agony.

Despite missing out on the world record, her effort was a new Masters, British and Paralympic C5 record.

"It was definitely the hardest hour of my life," Storey said. "I came in here hoping to go further than 46km, but to break the British record, I'm really chuffed."It's not as far as Leontien but to miss out to her is no bad thing."
