Croke Park will take over the running of Páirc Uí Chaoimh, after it has emerged that the Cork GAA stadium's cost ran over budget.

The venue's completion was delayed in 2017, eventually opening for the All-Ireland hurling quarter-finals that summer. Since then, it has played host to a number of high profile games, and even some non-GAA events such as Ed Sheeran concerts and the Liam Miller tribute game last September.

However, a report in the Irish Examiner on Friday suggests that Croke Park as set to take control of the the 45,000-capacity stadium's operations.

Croke Park stadium director Peter McKenna told the newspaper that the redevelopment of the Lee-side venue exceeded cost expectations.

"It became clear in the middle of the year that the amount spent on the stadium way exceeded what people thought," explained McKenna. "We're probably close to €110m as a final cost."
