Patrick Kane entered the record books with a point in his 19th consecutive game as the Chicago Blackhawks lost 3-2 to the Los Angeles Kings.

Kane's points scoring streak is the longest in NHL history for an American-born player and he is two games shy of the franchise record 21 games set by the legendary Bobby Hull in the 1971/72 season, but nearly half a season short of Wayne Gretzky's incredible league record of 51 successive games.

The winger scored his 14th goal of the season on the power-play midway through the first period, beating Kings goalie Jonathan Quick with a high wrist shot.

That goal saw him pass the 18 game streaks by fellow American players Eddie Olczyk and Phil Kessel.

Kane went on to add an assist on Niklas Hjalmarsson's second period goal, but the Blackhawks would proceed to fall apart in the third and lose the game in overtime.

Jeff Carter scored his 10th goal of the season to get the Kings on the board 52 seconds into the final period and Marian Gaborik levelled the scores with six minutes to go before also netting the match-winner.

"It's cool," Kane said. "You think about how many great American players have played the game, the two players that had that 18-game points streak and what they've done in their careers. So it's pretty cool right now, but kind of overshadowed by the loss.

"I've become pretty close with Eddie over the years here, to the point where I ask him for advice on a lot of different things and he's willing to share a lot, too.

"And then I've known Phil pretty well since I was 16 years old. So two great players, two great careers and it's fun to be there with them."
