The Blaze went into the contest hoping to move to the top of the standings but instead saw the Panthers draw level with them and Belfast Giants, with all three teams just one point behind league leaders Sheffield.
The opening period was a tight affair and all that separated the two teams at the end of the first 20 minutes was a strike from Nottingham's Robert Lachowicz at 12.56.
The hosts started to dominate more in the second period and added three more goals to their lead, Bruce Graham, Brandon Benedict and Anthony Stewart making it 4-0.
Coventry finally broke their duck with a powerplay goal from Brad Leeb at 46.27 and although the game was well beyond them, Mike Bayrack did add another at 57.24.
