Dwight King opened the scoring for the Kings but Columbus hit back through RJ Umberger and Ryan Johansen before Jeff Carter evened things up.

Umberger's second of the night put the Blue Jackets back ahead and Nathan Horton and Artem Anisimov extended the lead before Robyn Regehr grabbed a late consolation.

Phil Kessel scored twice as the NHL's other form team, Toronto Maple Leafs, claimed a sixth straight win 5-2 against Colorado Avalanche.

Kessel's brace sandwiched goals by James van Riemsdyk and Nazem Kadri as the Leafs opened a 4-0 lead before Nathan MacKinnon dragged the Avalanche back into it with two goals of his own.

The home side applied some late pressure but Toronto held firm and scored an empty-netter courtesy of Jay McClement to seal victory.

Panthers win again

Florida Panthers followed up Monday night's win over Pittsburgh Penguins with a 4-3 victory over Buffalo Sabres.

Drew Stafford twice put the Sabres ahead but Jesse Winchester and Sean Bergenheim grabbed levellers before Ed Jovanovski put Florida ahead at the first period break. Nick Bjugstad and Steve Ott then exchanged goals as the Panthers took the points.

Craig Anderson claimed a shutout as Ottawa Senators beat Washington Capitals 2-0.

The Caps were without top-scorer Alex Ovechkin and it showed as goals from Kyle Turris and Jason Spezza proved enough for the Senators.

Kari Leightonen kept Minnesota Wild off the scoresheet as Dallas Stars secured a 4-0 win. Vernon Fiddler, Erik Cole, Ray Whitney and Jordie Benn netted for the Stars.

Four unanswered goals ensured New York Islanders overcame their Manhattan rivals with a 5-3 win over the Rangers.

Hit back

Rick Nash scored twice as the Rangers opened up a 3-1 lead but the men from Long Island hit back with John Tavares recording three assists.

On the other side of the Hudson, New Jersey Devils had seven different goalscorers as they crushed St Louis Blues 7-1.

In the Western Conference, Vancouver Canucks held off a late fightback by the Edmonton Oilers to register a 2-1 victory.

Kellan Lain and Zack Kassian had the Canucks 2-0 up with Jordan Eberle grabbing one back with five minutes to go but the visitors held on.

The Anaheim Ducks were beaten at home for the first time in 22 games as the Winnipeg Jets left California with a 3-2 victory.

Cam Fowler had the Ducks ahead but Blake Wheeler, Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane put the Jets in control before Nick Bonino's late marker.
