Cal Crutchlow continued his fine form by securing pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Crutchlow dominated in wet conditions at the Northamptonshire track and his best time of two minutes 19.265 was more than a second quicker than the rest of the field.

The Briton won his first MotoGP race in a similarly rain-hit Czech Republic last month and the LCR Honda rider can now celebrate the third pole position of his career.

He is joined on the front row by Yamaha's Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales, riding for Suzuki.

Championship leader Marc Marquez will start from fifth place after coming off his machine in a late crash during final qualifying, eventually finishing just behind his Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Ireland's Eugene Laverty set the sixth fastest time ahead of another Briton Scott Redding, with both men riding Ducatis.

Marquez has a 53-point advantage on Rossi with eight races remaining in the season.

There will also be a British rider on pole in Moto2 after Sam Lowes produced the fastest time in their qualifying session.

Lowes, who sits third in the championship standings, beat overall leader Johann Zarco by almost four tenths of a second.
