Former title winners will not field a team in 2012 IndyCar Series

Newman-Haas Racing announced on Thursday that they will not field a team in the 2012 IndyCar Series. The team, co-founded by the late actor Paul Newman, said in a statement that the current economic climate meant they could no longer afford to compete. Newman-Haas had contested the top category of American open-wheel racing every year since 1983, winning eight championships in all. Three of them came prior to the split which occurred in the then CART series during the mid-1990s. Newman-Haas elected to stay with the main series rather than join the breakaway IRL and won five more titles, including four with Sebastien Bourdais. Drivers for the team have included some of the biggest in the sport, with Mario Andretti winning the CART title in 1984 and Nigel Mansell doing the same in 1993 after he left Formula One. This year, Oriol Servia finished fourth in the overall points standings for Newman-Haas while James Hinchcliffe was named IndyCar's rookie of the year.
