Briton takes curtialed race two after heavy rain hits Italian track

Britain's Tom Sykes claimed victory in a curtailed race two at Sunday's World Superbike washout at Monza. Only one race was possible after heavy rainfall caused the opening race of the day to be cancelled. But that only made it is far as half distance before a fresh downpour forced organisers to call a halt to proceedings and award half points. Sykes was hugely impressive aboard his Kawasaki in what action there was, establishing a lead of nearly 10 seconds before the red flag came out to signal the end of a frustrating day. Sykes' first win of the season was not without some good fortune after pole-sitter Sylvain Guintoli was forced out with technical issues on the warm-up lap. But after that it was all about the skill of the Briton, who took a commanding win from Leon Haslam (BMW Motorrad), with Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) third. Marco Melandri (BMW Motorrad) took fourth ahead of Max Biaggi (Aprilia), who now has 97.5 points at the head of the riders' standings Rigning champion Carlos Checa, who finished seventh today for Althea Ducati, has 95.5 championship points, while Sykes sits in third with 91.5.
