More misery for Lions in another dramatic weekend of action

Another pulsating round of NFL action took place this weekend. See below for a comprehensive round-up of week eight's results.

New York Jets 28-25 Kansas City Chiefs

Brett Favre shook off three interceptions to throw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Laveranues Coles with a minute remaining on Sunday as the New York Jets rallied for a 28-24 victory over the struggling Kansas City Chiefs. Rookie Brandon Flowers returned his second interception of the day 91 yards for a score midway through the fourth quarter to give the Chiefs (1-6) a 24-21 lead. But the Jets (4-3) responded with the help of a 37-yard punt return by Leon Washington to midfield. After completing his first three attempts of the drive, Favre lofted a pass into the front-left corner of the end zone to Coles, who reached back in front of cornerback Dimitiri Patterson to snag the ball with one hand.

Atlanta Falcons 14-27 Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles stayed in the hunt in the NFC East by downing the Atlanta Falcons 27-14 on Sunday. The Eagles improved to 4-3, while the Falcons dipped to 4-3, as elusive running back Brian Westbrook rushed for 167 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Philadelphia attack. Atlanta, who got off to a surprising 4-2 start in the NFC South behind rookie quarterback Matt Ryan and bruising runner Michael Turner, climbed within 20-14 on an eight-yard TD pass from Ryan to Roddy White with 4:02 left in the game. The Falcons' last chance for victory, however, disappeared when an official ruled that returner Adam Jennings had fumbled an Eagles punt at the 2:28 mark and that the Eagles had recovered the ball.

Dallas Cowboys 13-9 Tampa Bay Buccanners

The Dallas Cowboys snapped a two-game losing streak with a strong defensive showing, holding off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 13-9 on Sunday. Dallas limited Tampa Bay to three field goals and halted a potential game-winning drive by the Buccaneers at the Cowboys' 18 yard line with 19 seconds to play. The Cowboys (5-3 and third in the NFC East) had expected to be one of the top teams in the NFL before falling to the Arizona Cardinals and St Louis Rams in consecutive games and losing quarterback Tony Romo with a broken finger in the Arizona defeat. Back-up Brad Johnson, who quarterbacked the St Louis loss, also struggled against the Buccaneers but he connected with newly acquired Roy Williams for the only touchdown of the game, a two-yard pass with one second to play in the first half.

Washington Redskins 25-17 Detroit Lions

Santana Moss caught a touchdown pass and returned a punt for another as the Washington Redskins tamed the winless Detroit Lions 25-17. Shaun Suisham contributed four field goals to the win as the Redskins improved to 6-2 and the toothless Lions slipped to 0-7 before a quiet crowd at Ford Field. As the Lions' losing streak continued their string of consecutive sell-outs came to an end with only 54,312 taking in the contest marking the first time all 65,000 seats had not been filled for a regular season game since Ford Field opened in 2003. Detroit's miserable form continues and the Lions have now lost 14 of their last 15 games.

Carolina Panthers 27-23 Arizona Cardinals

Steve Smith scored two touchdowns, including a controversial 65-yard score, to lead the Carolina Panthers to victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Quarterback Jake Delhomme threw for 248 yards and two scores, including the go-ahead scoring pass to Smith, who broke a tackle and tip-toed down the sideline for a touchdown and a 24-23 lead with two seconds left in the third quarter. Replays seemed to show Smith stepping out of bounds but the call was upheld after a challenge, keeping Carolina perfect at home in five games. Smith's performance overshadowed a triumphant return to the field by Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who caught his second touchdown pass of the game to give Arizona a 23-17 lead with just under a minute to play in the third quarter.

Miami Dolphins 25-16 Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills suffered their second defeat of the season with a 25-16 loss at the Miami Dolphins to raise questions about their play-off ambitions. The Bills (5-2) had won their opening four games - their best start in 13 years taking them to the top of the AFC East - but Sunday's game with the Dolphins was their first test against a rival in the highly-competitive division. Miami (3-4), at the bottom of the division, trailed 16-7 in the third quarter but took advantage of Buffalo errors in the fourth quarter to clinch the win. Ricky Williams put the Dolphins ahead with a three-yard run for a touchdown in the third quarter before two field goals from Dan Carpenter secured victory for Miami.

New York Giants 21-14 Pittsburgh Steelers

Eli Manning threw a 2-yard pass to Kevin Boss 3:11 from the end for New York's only touchdown in a matchup of division leaders. The resilient Steelers tried to make up for Ben Roethlisberger's four interceptions by turning two big-play scores into a lead they preserved with a goal-line stand midway through the fourth quarter. But Giants tied it with 6:48 remaining when linebacker James Harrison's high snap flew over punter Mitch Berger's head and out of the end zone, handing New York the vital two points.

Jacksonville Jaguars 17-23 Cleveland Browns

Jamal Lewis ran for 81 yards and a touchdown and Derek Anderson completed three huge passes to give the Browns their second victory in as many games. Coming off the back of their shock win against the Giants, Anderson finished with 14-of-27 for 264 yards and a touchdown, including a 5-yard TD toss to Donte Stallworth, a 51-yard completion to Steve Heiden and a 43-yarder to Braylon Edwards that set up a short field goal.

San Francisco 49ers 13-34 Seattle Seahawks

Seattle snapped a three-match losing streak as Leonard Weaver ran for scores of 62 and 43 yards on short passes from Seneca Wallace, while Josh Wilson returned an interception 75 yards for another TD. It was the fifth straight loss for the shambolic Niners who benched J T O'Sullivan after his 11th fumble of the season, while Vernon Davis was ordered off the field and into the locker room after the hotheaded tight end got a personal foul for slapping a Seattle player's helmet late in the third quarter. Weaver, a college tight end with just six previous catches this season, scored both of Seattle's second-half touchdowns, including the clinching score on that 62-yard run down the Seahawks' sideline with 6:10 to play. Niners backup Shaun Hill finished with 173 yards passing and a TD throw to Jason Hill. Frank Gore rushed for 94 yards and caught seven passes for 65 more.

Houston Texans 35-6 Cincinnati Bengals

Houston's third straight win sent the Bengals to 0-8 with Kevin Walter scoring two touchdowns against his former team. The Texans were led by Matt Schaub's three touchdown passes and Andre Johnson's fourth straight 100-yard game - the latter capping a great month with a further 143-yards receiving. David Anderson had a touchdown in the second quarter and Jacoby Jones scored on a 73-yard punt return in the first period. The Bengals were in the red zone late in the third quarter when Mario Williams picked up his seventh sack of the year and stripped the ball from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Amobi Okoye recovered and Houston took advantage of the error on a 20-yard run by rookie Steve Slaton that made it 35-6.

New England Patriots 23-16 St Louis Rams

Patriots moved to 5-2 after Kevin Faulk held on to Matt Cassel's 15-yard touchdown pass with just over three minutes left on the clock. Without three sidelined running backs the Pats it was left to the reliable Faulk to take the ball on the left edge of the end zone after Randy Moss gained 26 yards and set up the winning touchdown. Until then, St. Louis' Josh Brown and New England's Stephen Gostkowski each kicked three field goals. BenJarvus Green-Ellis' 2-yard run on the Patriots' first possession had given them a 7-3 lead. Then the Rams went ahead 10-7 on a 69-yard pass play from Marc Bulger to Donnie Avery. Cassel was 21-for-33 for a career-high 267 yards as the replacement for Tom Brady.

Baltimore Ravens 29-10 Oakland Raiders

Ravens limited the Raiders to 35-yards in building a 19-0 halftime lead and with the Baltimore defence looking tight it was always enough for teh win. Afetr Sam Koch punted to the Oakland 7, JaMarcus Russell was sacked by Jameel McClain in the end zone on third down as Ravens opened the scoring. Baltimore went up 9-0 in the second quarter - Jim Leonhard returned a punt 46 yards to the Oakland 17 to set up a 1-yard touchdown by Willis McGahee. It became 16-0 when Joe Flacco found a wide-open Demetrius Williams on the left sideline for a 70-yard touchdown to complete a 97-yard drive that followed an interception by Frank Walker. Flacco then turned receiver after Troy Smith took over at QB, scoring on a 12-yard run to seal the win with 3:35 left.
