Dodgers blown away as Philadelphia book World Series return
The Philadelphia Phillies are the National League champions after hammering the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 to win the best-of-seven series 4-1.
The Phillies will play the winner of the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels in the opening game of the World Series on October 28. New York currently leads the American League Championship Series 3-1.
Andre Ethier gave LA the lead 1-0 in the top of the first inning but the Dodgers' hopes of forcing a Game Six were soon ruined when Jayson Werth slammed a three-run homer.
James Loney closed the gap to 3-2 but Pedro Feliz restored Philadelphia's advantage with a homer to make it 4-2. Raul Ibanez's double expanded the lead to 5-2 and Shane Victorino was hit by a pitch to push in another run.
Orlando Hudson's home run - the third of the night for the Dodgers - made it 6-3, but the Phillies' assault of LA's pitching was relentless.
Werth made it 9-3 and Jimmy Rollins' single at the bottom of the eighth provided the icing on the cake as Philadelphia kept their World Series defence on course.
"They're confident, they're talented, and they're going where we all want to go right now -- the World Series," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre - himself a four-time World Series winner when he managed the Yankees.
