Popular Olympic host to hold World Championships
Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium will host the 2015 World Championships, the IAAF has confirmed.
The city successfully hosted the Olympic Games two years ago, when Usain Bolt claimed three gold medals, all in record time.
The Chinese capital was the sole bidder after London dropped out over uncertainty surrounding the future of the 2012 Olympic main stadium.
"To help build up our sport and the culture of athletics in a country of 1.6 billion inhabitants is a great opportunity," IAAF president Lamine Diack said.
"As we sometimes say, China is not a country, it's a continent. So this is a fantastic opportunity for our sport and for the sport in China."
Liu Jingmin, Beijing's vice mayor, said: "This is the most important sporting event for China since the 2008 Olympic Games.
"We thank you for your trust. We will deliver a high standard event in Beijing which will open a new chapter in Championships' standards."
The city also plans to organise international athletics meetings in Beijing ahead of the championships.
Currently, Shanghai is the only Chinese city with a top-level Diamond League meeting.
